The Hill has lots of details.

This has to do with changes in student loan programs, which of course had no business being tucked into the health-care bill in the first place and apparently doesn’t belong in a reconcilation package.

Republicans also expended most of the day and night yesterday proposing amendments mostly aimed at removing provisiions in the bill. All of those were defeated, but several Democrats supported a number of them.

One of those, advanced by Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, would have prohibited coverage of Viagra for child molesters and rapists, among other things. A motion to table it was passed by a 57-42 vote, with Evan Bayh of Indiana and Ben Nelson of Nebraska the only Dems supporting Coburn’s measure. Remember “Viagra for sex offenders” as a slogan that may come up in campaigns against those 57 Democrats someday.

The Senate still isn’t done, with more GOP mischief resuming this morning. That’s why it’s known as a great deliberative body.

Treatment for men unable to have an erection took a great leap forward when the first oral erectile dysfunction (ED) medication, Viagra (sildenafil), was introduced in 1998. But there have been strides recently in a host of other ED treatments, ranging from over-the-counter pumps to surgical implants and suppositories.

Diagnosing your own ED is not a good idea, however. If you have trouble getting an erection, it’s important to see a doctor before pursuing any sort of treatment. There could be a medical explanation for your condition, and your health and sexual history may come into play.

1. Pills

Viagra, Cialis (tadalafil), and Levitra (vardenafil) fight erectile dysfunction by relaxing smooth muscle in the penis, a process that increases blood flow and enables an erection.

The effectiveness of these phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors is well documented. “ED drugs are 70% effective in allowing the penis to achieve hardness for sexual activity,” says Irwin Goldstein, MD, director of San Diego Sexual Medicine and the editor in chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

And the pills are generally considered safe. Side effects can include headaches, sinus congestion, indigestion, and blue vision, but all are usually mild. “They’re some of the safer drugs on the planet,” says Dr. Goldstein.

If you’re on ED drugs, don’t take nitrates—such as nitroglycerine pills for chest pain or the recreational drugs known as “poppers.” The combination can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels and can even cause a heart attack.

2. Injections

If oral medications don’t work, a doctor might recommend injecting medication directly into the base or the side of the penis with a tiny needle or inserting a suppository into the urethra.

The injectable drug alprostadil is a synthetic version of prostaglandin E1, a hormone-like substance that functions similarly to ED pills. Some injections mix alprostadil with other medications—such as the vasodilator papaverine and the alpha-blocker phentolamine—to increase its effectiveness.

Your doctor can teach you to perform the injections yourself at home.

3. Suppositories

For guys who prefer not to inject themselves or have a fear of needles, a suppository called MUSE—containing the drug alprostadil—is also available, though it is not considered as effective as the shots. “The injection is a direct delivery of medication to the penis, while the suppository is inserted into the urethra and when it is absorbed, it loses some of its strength,” says Ridwan Shabsigh, MD, director of the division of urology at Maimonides Medical Center and professor of clinical urology at Columbia University in New York City.

Both methods have the same primary complaint: Men using injections or MUSE often say they take away from the spontaneity of sex because it takes time to prepare and administer the medications.

4. Pumps

Penis vacuum pumps get a good laugh in the Austin Powers films, but they happen to be quite effective at increasing blood flow to the penis and they’re available over-the-counter at relatively low cost.

The process of pumping air out of the tube pulls blood into the erectile tissue. To stay erect after removing the tube, it’s a good idea to slip a constriction ring over the base of the penis.

5. Constriction rings

“Cock rings” worn around the base of the penis can slow down the speed at which blood leaves the penis. While constriction rings won’t increase blood flow into the penis, they can prolong an erection once one is achieved (using a vacuum pump, for instance).

Rings should not be used for more than 30 minutes and should be removed immediately if you experience cold, numbness, or pain in the genital area.

6. Implants

The technology of penile implants is improving all the time. “They rival implants in other parts of the body, like the pacemaker,” says Dr. Shabsigh.

There are two types of implants.

Inflatable implants are cylinders that are implanted in the erection chambers of the penis and inflated by a hydraulic pump implanted in the scrotum.

Malleable implants are semi-rigid, bendable rods that are implanted into the penis, which can then be manipulated manually into an erect or flaccid position.

7. Surgery

Vascular surgery is rarely performed but may be a last resort for some men. “There are some patients who can benefit from vascular surgery, but the number is less than 1% of men who have ED,” says Dr. Shabsigh. “It’s the equivalent to a coronary artery bypass and there are only a handful of surgeons in the country who do it.”

Levitra Improves Erectile Function in Patients Taking High Blood Pressure Medications.

Levitra is one of three FDA approved oral phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors which are used to treat erectile dysfunction. The other two are Cialis and Viagra. PDE5 inhibitors relax narrowed or hardened penile arteries to the point where they will allow blood to enter the penis and create an erection in patients with ED.

E.D. or Erectile Dysfunction is a man’s inability to obtain or maintain an erection and usually involves compromised penile arteries; arteries which have been narrowed and/or hardened most likely by the build up of cholesterol or plaque within arterial walls. E.D. Can be caused one of several factors, which include poor eating habits, high cholesterol intake, smoking, stress, lack of exercise, high blood pressure conditions, etc…

One of the most common side effects associated with anti-hypertensive drugs is impotence.

High blood pressure medications and more in particular, those which contain either beta-blockers or diuretics have the effect of reducing a person’s ability to obtain an erection.

For this reason, most men fear high blood pressure treatments. Fortunately, though recent studies reveal that sexual performance can be reestablished in men taking either one or multiple anti-hypertensive medications if the treatment also includes the use of vardenafil HCl (Levitra).

One Particular Study and its results

Recently, an extensive study relevant to the problem was performed in Germany. The study included 354 patients from 98 primary health care facilities in Germany. Apart from their high blood pressure conditions, all patients had been suffering from ED for at least 6 months. All participants were also taking either multiple anti-hypertensive medications including diuretics, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, etc… Alpha blockers were excluded.

In order to rule out psychological factors a portion of the participants received a placebo pill instead of Levitra. The rest of the participants received Levitra in 5 to 20 mg dosages. Participants were required to continue the treatment for a 12 week period.

All participants were required to keep a diary which included their answers to standardized questions concerning their particular ED issues. Eighty-three percent (83%) of patients taking the real Levitra claimed they were successfully able to have sexual intercourse their partners. Only fifty-three percent of the participants taking the fake or placebo pill were able to do so. It made no difference whether the patient took either one or multiple anti-hypertensive pills simultaneously.

In reality, most people need 50mg or 100mg dosage of Viagra tablets for better results. 25mg Viagra does not seem to work for most. Whereas, Levitra comes in considerably dosage forms of 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg, with 10mg dose working effectively for most people.

Levitra is also a step ahead of Viagra as lesser dosage means lesser probability of side effects. In this sense, you might experience fewer side effects with Levitra and you can wipe out the chances of experiencing the nasty side effects of Viagra.

If you are allergic to the active ingredient sildenafil found in Viagra or any other active ingredient, Levitra could be your answer. So find out more about web design the ‘not so popular’ yet an effective impotence medicine. Levitra may be the manna from heaven for you even if Viagra wasn’t.

What is the normal recommended dosage?

The suggested dose of levitra is to start with 10mg, and to adjust the strength depending on the results. However, the doctor may change your selection if he/she feels that based on your medical conditions.

How effective is Levitra?

4,400 men with impotence participated in over 50 trials to test the effectiveness of Levitra. The studies revealed a clinically meaningful and statistically significant result compared with placebo.

A further four independent trials were done for Levitra in the US. Two trials were conducted in the general impotence population and two in special groups (patients with diabetes; and post-prostatectomy patients). web design results for all four trials were just as significant: Levitra significantly improved the rates of achieving an erection compared to placebo (80% for Levitra 20mg, compared to a 52% response in the placebo).

Who should not take Levitra?

Levitra is only for male patients with impotence; it is not for children or women. Before you start treatment of Levitra, be sure to ask your family doctor if your heart is healthy enough, as it can alter blood pressure.

Levitra is never to be used in conjunction with nitrate drugs. The combination of Levitra and nitrates can make your blood pressure suddenly drop to unsafe levels. Nitrates are found in many prescription medications that are used to treat angina (chest pain due to heart disease), including:

• Nitroglycerin(sprays, ointments, skin patches or pastes, and tablets that are swallowed or dissolved in the mouth)

• Isosorbide mononitrate and isosorbide dinitrate (tablets that are swallowed, chewed, or dissolved in the mouth)

Nitrates are also found in recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite (‘poppers’). If you are not sure if any of your medications contain nitrates, or if you do not understand what nitrates are, contact Meds4all.

Sex sells. I suppose this is why the results of a study entitled “Sildenafil Treatment of Women with Antidepressant Associated Sexual Dysfunction” were reported with great enthusiasm around the world after they were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (Jama). Yet the study is interesting for a number of reasons.

Sildenafil was originally sold as Viagra. Despite its success in treating men, there has been no equivalent drug for women. In the UK, there is only one licensed drug, Intrinsa, which is used in specific circumstances for female libido problems after gynaecological surgery.

The lack of a “female Viagra” highlights questions over the broader issue of “female sexual dysfunction”. While men with sexual problems frequently respond to drugs, female sexual problems tend to be more complex and far less amenable to pharmacological treatment.

Indeed, as the British Medical Journal noted in 2003, when female sexual dysfunction as a disorder was mooted at an “international consensus development conference” on the subject, 18 of the 19 authors had “financial interests or other relationships with a total of 22 drug companies”. The obvious concern was that the potential for profit was being put higher than the likely benefit to women.

The latest Jama research seems to have found a use for sildenafil in women. Or has it? The women in the trial were experiencing “sexual dysfunction” as a side effect of taking medication – in this case antidepressants.

In order to take part in the trial, the women had to be sexually active before they became depressed, but to have experienced sexual problems for just four weeks – a relatively short space of time.

So how much difference did sildenafil make? When its effect was compared to that of a placebo, there was no difference in the women’s ratings of their desire or arousal and only a small, if statistically significant, effect on orgasm. Forty-three per cent of the women on sildenafil experienced headaches, and both groups had similar scores for depression at the end of the eight-week study.

The logic of using one drug to treat another one’s side effects may sound perverse, but it is frequently applied in the world of medicine. The issue is making sure that each is properly justified.

Americans’ drug of choice: anything that can be prescribed.

If it’s not restless legs, erectile dysfunction or an overactive bladder, then there must be something else wrong with us. No matter what your ailment is, the drug makers have a pill to peddle.

Just ask your doctor if Cure-it-All is right for you, as every ad likes to say. He or she surely will prescribe something to fix the problem, even if the side effects often sound a lot worse.

“America has become the world’s greatest medicine show,” author Melody Petersen writes in the introduction to her new book, Our Daily Meds, published by Sarah Crichton Books.

Petersen, who covered the pharmaceutical industry for four years for The New York Times until 1997, has put together a harrowing tale of how the pharmaceutical industry has hooked the nation on prescription drugs to the tune of more than $250 billion in annual sales—more money than is spent on gasoline and fast food.
I stayed up the other night to read her book and then couldn’t get to sleep even after I took an Ambien pill.

If you regularly watch the evening network news, like me, and switch from Williams to Gibson to Couric, you’ll notice without fail that most of the sponsors are pharmaceutical companies pushing pills to lighten your burden, real or imagined. No matter what the channel, there’s Sally Field touting a once-a-month tablet to strengthen the bones or some middle-aged guy singing Viva Viagra or a guy sitting in a bathtub with his wife, pumped with Cialis, waiting for the “right moment” so he can “be ready.”

What is it with these sex pills anyway? You’d think most of the men in America couldn’t rise to the occasion any more if you watch these commercials. With apologies to Pete Seeger, where has all the testosterone gone?

And just to show that I’m not just picking on guys, a reported 43 percent of the female population is said to suffer from “sexual dysfunction.” This came from a 1999 article in the respected Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), not considered to be a crackpot outfit. This condition is characterized, one must assume, by her declaring, “Not tonight, honey, I got a headache.” America doesn’t exactly come off as the Land of Libido.

Not to minimize medical problems, but you have to wonder whether the country is dangerously overdosed. I’m sure there are many meds that help people live better lives—I’ve popped a sleep aid or pain pill in my time—but let’s not get carried away with the notion that there’s a miracle remedy for every disorder.

Drug dependency clearly is out of control and for just one bit of proof, let’s note this sad statistic: America accounts for 66 percent of the global antidepressant market. Prozac, anyone?

Better yet, invent a new disease—Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)—and a new antidepressant—Paxil—and the money will just keep rolling in. Produced by pharmaceutical giant Glaxo SmithKline, Paxil was the first and only FDA-approved medication for the treatment of SAD, which, we are told,13 percent of Americans suffer from.

This is not to say that anxiety disorders and phobias aren’t real, but that if they do exist they can be successfully treated with cognitive therapy rather than drugs, according to many medical experts. But drug companies don’t really seem as interested in cures as they do in the more profitable practice of medicating us for the rest of our lives.

Petersen observes, “As the medicine merchants have poured billions of dollars into selling their wares, they have become America’s most powerful industry. In the process, they have transformed American life. The small white-capped whiskey-colored bottles that once took up a corner of the bathroom cabinet now play a role in lives that few products can match. Almost 65 percent of the nation now takes a drug available by prescription.”

Good Lord! Two-thirds of us are regular pill poppers!

For supporting evidence, all you need to know is that the pharmaceutical industry spends a reported $15 billion a year on public relations and marketing—twice as much as it does on drug research and development. Ads typically magnify the benefits of medication while other ways of dealing with problems are ignored.

New diseases are created with the help of PR firms that aim to create a “buzz” about the newest drug. For example, Pfizer spent $1 billion to kick-start Viagra 10 years ago and since has made billions peddling the little blue pill. Not to be outdone, the rival makers of Levitra and Cialis quickly jumped on the erectile dysfunction bandwagon to push their pills.

The close ties between drug companies and doctors is well established, but only one state—Minnesota—requires public reports of company marketing payments to physicians. Doctors typically will say that the payments they receive don’t influence what they prescribe for their patients. Anybody want to buy the Brooklyn Bridge?

Don’t take my word for it. The New York Times reported in May 2007 that an analysis of Minnesota records found that drug payments to psychiatrists rose more than six-fold from 2000 to 2005 to $1.6 million, while at the same time prescriptions for antipsychotics for children jumped ninefold.

Quoting from the Times story, “These best-selling drugs, including Risperdal, Seroquel, Zyprexa, Abilify and Geodon, are now being prescribed to more than half a million children in the United States to help parents deal with behavior problems despite profound risks and almost no approved uses for minors.”

Drug companies are constantly coming up with “magic bullets” to cure all our ills by inventing a host of newly-created maladies such as “Attention Deficit Disorder,” which in the old days sat under the umbrella of “dim-witted.” Nowadays, if your kid can’t pay attention or is hyperactive the easy answer is Ritalin or a drug equivalent that produces the same pharmacological effects as cocaine. Nothing like turning kids into drug addicts.

Yes, indeed, sickness sells. Whether it’s mental illness, which we’re told affects one-third of the U.S. population, irritable bowel syndrome, high cholesterol. fibromyalgia (at one time diagnosed as a simple pain in the neck) or low bone density, there’s a capsule out there waiting to be swallowed.

The Federal Drug Administration is charged with making sure drugs are safe and effective, but the fact is that Congress calls the shots. That’s because drug companies have one of the strongest lobbies on Capitol Hill and these companies have one or more lobbyist assigned to every single member of Congress to hype their agendas as it relates to laws governing drug use and funding for research.

Well, this effort to alert readers about the dangers of taking too many drugs has left me in a state of hyper-electronic exhaustion compounded by advancing carpal tunnel syndrome with an uncertain prognosis. In the old days, this would have been known simply as writer’s cramp and I would have taken two aspirin and been fine the next day.

Levitra, an erectile dysfunction (ED) drug made by Bayer AG is undergoing its third labeling change since 2005. This time, the precautions section of the Levitra label will be changed to note its possible association with transient global amnesia, or TGA.

TGA is a sudden, temporary episode of memory loss that can’t be attributed to a more common neurological condition, such as epilepsy, transient ischemic attack, stroke or head injury. During an episode of transient global amnesia, recall of recent events simply vanishes, so a victim is unable to remember where they are or how they got there. They may also draw a blank when asked to remember things that happened a day, a month or even a year ago.

Victims of TGA do remember who they are, and they will recognize family members and others they have known for a long time. When an episode of TGA is over, a victim will remember nothing that happened while their memory was impaired, and might not recall the hours beforehand.

According to the FDA, the Levitra label got the transient global amnesia note “because of a limited number of post-marketing reports of men who experienced TGA” around the time they took Levitra. The FDA is stressing that no direct link has been found between TGA and Levitra. The agency has also said that the reported instances of TGA in men taking Levitra may have been spurred by something else, even by sex.

This is the third labeling change for Levitra since 2005. At that time, warnings about vision loss were added to the label of Levitra, as well as Viagra and Cialis – two other ED drugs. This sudden vision loss was attributed to NAION (non arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy), a condition where blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve.

In 2006, a second warning was added to the label of Levitra, Cialis and Viagra regarding sudden hearing loss related to the medications. The FDA said the warning was prompted by more two dozen instances of sudden hearing loss linked to the drugs. In about a third of those reports, the hearing loss was permanent.

Erectile Dysfunction Drug Levitra to Get Label Change Noting Rare Reports of Transient Global Amnesia.

The erectile dysfunction drug Levitra is getting a label change noting rare reports of transient global amnesia in men taking the drug.

Transient global amnesia, or TGA, is a brief bout of amnesia, not lasting longer than a day, without causing other problems.

Levitra’s label change isn’t a warning or a precaution, and it doesn’t mean that the drug causes memory problems. The reported cases of transient global amnesia in men taking Levitra may have been spurred by something else, even by sex.

“Sex can trigger TGA,” says Harvard neurology professor Louis R. Caplan, MD. He likens TGA to a tape recorder that’s not working.

“People otherwise can walk and talk and read and do high-level things, but they’re not recording the information, as if their tape recorder is off,” Caplan explains.

Transient global amnesia “scares people” but it doesn’t affect function, long-term memory, or other aspects of health, Caplan says. “It isn’t a reason not to take the drug.”

Still, men who experience transient global amnesia should see a doctor to rule out illness or injury, says Caplan, who is also an attending physician in the Comprehensive Center for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Not a “Warning” or “Precaution”

Transient global amnesia will join a list of other rare, reported adverse events — including vision problems and sudden hearing loss, which are noted for all ED drugs — in the “Post-Marketing” section of Levitra’s label.

Levitra’s label got the transient global amnesia note “because of a limited number of post-marketing reports of men who experienced TGA” around the time they took Levitra, the FDA tells WebMD in an email.

But those reports don’t prove that Levitra was to blame.

Bayer Pharmaceuticals and the FDA have agreed on the wording of Levitra’s label change, Bayer Pharmaceuticals spokesman Mark C. Burnett tells WebMD by email. Bayer “constantly monitors product safety reports and works closely together with worldwide regulatory authorities, including the FDA, to ensure that appropriate product information is shared with physicians and with their patients,” Burnett says.

Caplan, a transient global amnesia expert, has seen many TGA patients, but only one man who had TGA after taking an ED drug.

The patient, a 51-year-old man with a history of hypertension and migraines, had played golf in the morning. After returning home with his girlfriend, he took Viagra.

“After 30 minutes, as he was about to engage in sexual intercourse, the patient reported that he ‘felt weird’… [and] could not remember that he had played golf that morning,” Caplan and colleagues wrote in Neurology’s Sept. 10, 2002, issue.

The man was hospitalized for a day. His memory gradually improved during that time, though he hadn’t regained his lost memories when he was discharged from the hospital.

Few other cases of transient global amnesia in men taking ED drugs have been published in medical journals. Those cases include a German man who experienced TGA after he apparently took Cialis, his doctors wrote in the International Journal of Impotence Research’s July/August 2005 issue.

None of the case reports confirm that ED drugs prompted transient global amnesia.
Cialis, Viagra: No Label Changes

The three erectile dysfunction drugs — Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra — belong to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5) inhibitors. None has been shown to cause transient global amnesia.

Only Levitra is changing its label to note reports of transient global amnesia. The FDA tells WebMD it can’t comment on whether the makers of Cialis and Viagra have been asked to make similar label changes.

Pfizer makes Viagra. “We can’t really speculate whether the Viagra label will be updated, but we certainly do believe that the current label accurately reflects the safety and efficacy of Viagra,” Pfizer spokeswoman Jennifer Jacob tells WebMD in an email.

Eli Lilly & Co. makes Cialis. “Lilly typically doesn’t discuss potential label changes or regulatory action,” Stephanie Kenney-Andrzejewski, senior vice president for communications firm MS&L Global Health, tells WebMD on behalf of Lilly in an email. Kenney adds that “Cialis continues to be a generally well-tolerated and effective treatment for ED,” with a safety profile backed by clinical research in more than 16,000 patients and more than 11.5 million men worldwide who have been prescribed Cialis.

First, Viagra is not an aphrodisiac. In other words, it cannot cause an erection in the absence of actual sexual desire and stimulation. Also, Viagra is not a cure for erectile dysfunction but rather a treatment for a symptom; eliminating a symptom is not the same thing as treating the underlying cause, whether physical or psychological.

And while there have been countless jokes about one of Viagra’s potential side effects—an erection that can last four hours or more—doctors say that is no laughing matter. While such long-lasting erections are rare, they can be painful and can cause permanent damage to blood vessels and tissue. Fortunately, in most cases, a simple ice pack will make the swelling go down.

Levitra’s New ED Ad: It’s Sex AND Serious Medical Issues.

Last night while on the elliptical and watching “NBC Nightly News,” one spot amid the wall-to-wall commercials for drugs caught my attention.

It looks like after 10 years since the first erectile dysfunction pill came on the market – Pfizer’s Viagra celebrated a decade since winning FDA approval last week – the makers of Levitra are trying a new marketing tack.

As far as I can remember, the impotence drug ads have always had a subtle or, perhaps, not-so-subtle focus on sex. For example, one of Eli Lilly’s recent commercials for Cialis has a couple standing by the kitchen sink when the faucet suddenly shoots a spray of water toward the ceiling.

And, Pfizer now has a bunch of middle-aged guys enthusiastically singing, “Viva Viagra” to the tune of “Viva Las Vegas.” If Elvis really were alive, I think he’d have put a stop to it by now. And Priscilla is too busy on “Dancing with the Stars” or getting work done.
