Erectile dysfunction product recalled over safety warnings

OTTAWA – Health Canada is warning consumers, especially those with heart disease, not to use ADAM, a product sold for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The product could pose serious health risks and possibly lead to sudden cardiac death, the department says.

ADAM contains an undeclared pharamceutical similar to the prescription drug, sildenafil, Health Canada says in the warning. It adds that the use of sildenafil by patients with heart disease can result in death, heart attack, stroke, low blood pressure, chest pain and abnormal heartbeat.

Sildenafil should not be used by individuals taking any type of nitrate drug, such as nitroglycerine, due to the risk of developing potentially fatal low blood pressure.

There has been one report of an adverse reaction associated with the use of ADAM.

Adam was widely available at stores across Canada and over the Internet. The distributor, Natural Health Solutions, is voluntarily recalling the product and retailers are being told to remove it from their shelves.

Consumers are advised to return the product to its place of purchase.

Health Canada also says that consumers should avoid any unauthorized products that claim to treat erectile dysfunction because they could contain potentially hazardous ingredients. Drugs and natural health products that are authorized for sale in Canada carry an eight-digit drug identification number, a natural product number or a drug identification number for homeopathic medicine.
