Thai candidates accused of vote-buying with Viagra

BANGKOK (AFP) — Parliamentary candidates in Thailand’s upcoming election are trying to buy the votes of elderly men by passing out free Viagra, a local government official said Friday.
Thais head to the polls on December 23 for the first time since the military toppled the elected prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless coup last year.
Residents in Prathumthani, on the northern outskirts of Bangkok, reported some of the candidates were passing out doses of the anti-impotence drug in exchange for promised votes, said Sayan Nopkham, a local government official.
Campaigner: Viagra Used to Bribe Voters
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — Vote-buying is an old practice in Thai politics, but one candidate for December’s Thai election has reportedly come up with a new tactic — handing out Viagra instead of cash.
The allegation, made Thursday by a campaign worker against a rival party, comes as rules about handing out favors to voters have become stricter than ever, barring even the distribution of free T-shirts and soft drinks.
Sayan Nopcha, a campaigner for the People’s Power Party in Pathum Thai province just north of Bangkok, said the drug used to treat sexual dysfunction in men was being distributed to elderly male voters at social functions.
Doctors want more Viagra on the NHS
More men should get access to Viagra on the NHS to slow down the trade in fake medicines, leading doctors have said.
The British Medical Association (BMA) called on the Government to look again at who is eligible for drugs to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).
Chairman Dr Hamish Meldrum said the BMA had “always been against the rather discriminatory way” in which some patients got Viagra and others did not. The BMA’s view is that doctors should be able to prescribe Viagra and other ED drugs to all patients with a demonstrable clinical need.
Pfizer appoints WWAV to OTC Viagra account
Pharmaceuticals giant Pfizer is understood to have appointed WWAV Rapp Collins London to its ?10m pan-European consumer marketing account for Viagra, which it plans to sell over the counter (OTC) in the UK for the first time.
The agency beat Tullo Marshall Warren (TMW) in a head-to-head pitch. Tequila/London was knocked out at an earlier stage.
WWAV will initially raise awareness of Viagra’s new status once it has secured a licence to sell the drug OTC. The agency will then be tasked with on and offline customer management programmes on an ongoing basis.
Psychological Problems Often the Cause of Erectile Dysfunction in Younger Men
Men in their 20s and 30s are usually in their sexual peak. But some men under the age of 40 may experience sexual deficiencies such as erectile dysfunction or low sex drive.
Although pre-existing health conditions may be to blame, erectile dysfunction in younger men is most often the result of psychological problems, according to experts.
Erectile dysfunction, ED for short, is the inability to attain or maintain a penile erection. In order for the penis to maintain an erection, it must stimulated by nerve signals that prompt the blood vessels in the penis to expand so blood can fill it. If the blood vessels are not fully compressed, an erection may not be obtained or may not last long.
