New Delhi (PTI): In one of the biggest seizure of psychotropic substances, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has seized a whopping 823 kg consignment of “designer drugs” and Viagra — worth over Rs 45 crore in the international market from Mumbai airport.
According to sources, the consignment, seized on Friday, was scheduled for Mexico. One person — Pradeep Dhond– has been arrested in this connection. He has been sent to judicial custody.
Sources said 441 kg of Amphetamine-Type Stimulants (ATS) was recovered from Air Cargo complex of the Airport in Mumbai and this consignment was scheduled for Mexico. On subsequent raids conducted by the agency, 382 kg of ATS, also known as designer drugs, were recovered.
Sources said that the raid at one of the many complexes in Sahar and Andheri also yielded 1.5 lakh Viagra tablets along with other tablets and injections worth Rs 1.5 crores which are yet to be identified.
ATS are popularly known as “designer drugs” and are a form of synthetic drug that, among other effects, act as stimulant.
Popular versions of ATS include LSD, methamphetamine, ecstasy, GHB and ketamine.
“Synthetic drug is one that is manufactured in a lab and does not rely on plant-based components. Many were originally designed to get around drug laws by shifting the molecular structure of a banned drug,” a senior DRI official said.
Stating that ATS is very popular in America and Canada, an intelligence official said that “it is quite possible that the consignment was to be routed to these countries through Mexico.”
