Shy doc posed as woman

A FORMER north Cumbrian surgeon could be struck off for illegally prescribing himself the sex drug Viagra because he was too shy to see a doctor.

Bungling Jonathan Bala used a woman’s name to obtain the pills because he was too embarrassed to ask a colleague to prescribe it.

He claimed the medication was for a female relative – even though she could have had no possible use for it.

The married father-of-three was caught out when a pharmacist became suspicious. He had already obtained the drug on two previous occasions.

A criminal investigation followed and he was last year given a six-month suspended jail sentence after admitting two counts of deception and one of attempted deception.

At the time Dr Bala, an intestinal surgeon, was working in Wales at Llandudno hospital’s accident and emergency department. He later moved to Cumbria.

Following the court case, it is alleged that the Nigerian-born surgeon, then 42, failed to tell the General Medical Council (GMC) of his conviction. It is also claimed that Dr Bala failed to declare it to the North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust when he moved to the county to practice.

The health watchdog will meet in Manchester tomorrow and Thursday this week to discuss his future.

He could be struck off completely or have conditions imposed on his practice.

Dr Bala qualified from Nigeria’s Ahmadu Bello University in 1989 and moved to the UK to practice in 2000.

With a family history of diabetes he started to suffer symptoms, including high blood pressure, cholesterol and impotence, in 2004.

The symptoms gradually worsened but, as he was too shy to ask a colleague to prescribe Viagra, he decided to write a fake prescription using a female relative’s name. He managed to obtain the drug on two occasions but was caught out on the third, when a pharmacist at an Asda store raised the alarm.

In court he admitted the deception charges and was handed a jail sentence, suspended for two years.

But in a statement, the watchdog said: “It is alleged that Dr Bala failed to inform the GMC of this conviction.

“It is further alleged that Dr Bala failed to disclose the conviction when he took up employment with the North Cumbria Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. It is alleged that Dr Bala’s actions were misleading and dishonest.

“He could be erased from the register or there could be conditions imposed on the doctor’s registration.”
