Viagra fan Colin
Viagra fan Colin tells all in Channel Five documentary.
FORMER mayor and one-time town crier Colin Beswick is well used to the limelight.
But this week the 80-year-old was on the receiving end of newfound fame as a devotee of the sex drug Viagra.
Marking ten years since the launch of the pill, Channel Five screened a documentary charting its history.
Featuring prominently in the programme was the retired headteacher and his 67-year-old partner, Lynda.
Mr Beswick, who became an MBE in 2004 for services to Durham City, volunteered to tell his and Lynda’s story and their Viagra experience.
Speaking from his home in Meadowfield, near Durham, Mr Beswick, a long-time champion of the over-60s and a member of countless organisations, said he wanted others to know of the benefits.
Somewhat taken aback by the response he has received since the programme was screened, the former Durham mayor told The Northern Echo how it all began.
He said his life was devastated when Joyce, his wife of 52 years, died suddenly as they were embarking on their annual trip to Eastbourne in 2003.
He said: “I missed Joyce terribly and became more and more lonely without her.”
But in May 2006, he was introduced to Lynda, a widow from Huddersfield, and they hit it off straight away.
Three months later, they met again and began a relationship.
Lynda said: “We got on from the word go, but sex was not the overriding issue for me.”
But despite his advancing years, Mr Beswick, a prominent Rotarian, was anxious to make Lynda as happy as he could and decided to pep up their bedtimes with more than Horlicks.
They recently saw a notice in a national paper asking for anyone who had experienced Viagra to contact Channel Five.
Mr Beswick said: “I felt if we could help quell the stigma that sometimes surrounds Viagra and let people know there was no shame, just benefits from taking it, it might help others.
“Everyone deserves complete happiness irrespective of their age.”
