Viagra May Damage Fertilit
The popular anti-impotence drug, Viagra, may harm sperm and affect a man’s chances of fathering a child, new research warns.
Dr David Glenn, a consultant gynaecologist at Queen’s University Belfast, reached the conclusion after bathing sperm samples in weak solutions of Viagra and comparing them to standard samples. He found that while Viagra made sperm more active, it damaged sperm’s ability to enter the egg to fertilise it.
Dr Glenn said the findings should act as a warning to young men who take the drug recreationally.
The study also means that some fertility clinics that use the drug to help men produce sperm could in fact be making conception more difficult for couples already struggling with fertility.
The study will be published in the journal Fertility and Sterility.
