Viagra may Help Avert Fetal Growth Retardation
A group of American scientists could have found yet another use for Viagra after it was revealed that the drug, which is used to treat male erectile dysfunction, can improve foetal growth in sheep.
According to researchers at Texas AgriLife Research, Viagra increased the blood flow in pregnant sheep, which in turn increased the supply of vital amino acids and other nutrients to the fetus.
Dr Guoyao Wu, who is the animal nutritionist at AgriLife, hoped that this study will also prove to be true among humans. “Because 5 per cent to 10 per cent of infants are born as low birth-weight babies worldwide, and because foetal-growth retardation is also a significant problem in livestock species, our findings have important implications for both human health and animal agriculture”, Dr Wu added.
If these findings are found true in human trials as well, then Viagra is a true all-rounder.
